Sergio Roggerone is certainly familiar with the Catholicism that has produced so many centuries of religious art. Although the Argentine painter is especially devoted to icons, his own paintings aren't shy about taking liberties with iconographic subject matter. That's what makes his current Gomez Gallery exhibit a sly treat.
His humorous riffs on a venerable tradition include "Cotton Club," in which a saintly looking woman is intently bent over a clothes iron, and "Madonna of Wine," in which the holy lady holds a glass of wine in one hand and a bunch of grapes in the other, all the while balancing a basketful of grapes on top of her head. The artist is having fun, but these are gentle and, in their own way, reverent pictures. Likewise, he has some paintings in which the carved and painted frames are playfully ornate.
