WINE ADVOCATE RATES LATEST RECUERDO WINES
Luis’ comments:
‘This is a great spot for viticulture and even the young vines surprised them with the quality obtained. The wines are phenomenal. I also had the chance to taste some of the wines from the individual owners, who have decided the grapes they want in their plots and what kind of wine they want: elegant, intense, fruity or structured. A fun exercise and a great luxury to have your own wine produced to your specifications. They produce 360 wines... crazy work! Young and enthusiastic Pablo Martorell, from Tunuyan, a few kilometers away from the winery, is the resident winemaker in charge of the wines. I tasted the wines on a couple of occasions in Madrid and also visited the vineyards and their impressive restaurant on a great Sunday afternoon in the Uco Valley.’
Recuerdo Gran Corte 2011 – 93 Points
The 2011 Recuerdo Gran Corte Blend is a subtle blend of 65% Malbec, 20% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot aged for 22 months in French oak barrels, 60% of which were new. The oak is almost imperceptible; such is the power of fruit. The aroma is subtle, complex, and restrained with integration of the wood notes with ripe red and black fruit and flowery aromas. The varieties are also very well-integrated. They were fermented separately but the blend was made early on. The ultra-sleek palate has silky tannins, very pure and focused flavors, balanced acidity and great length. In short, it is a great wine that would benefit from some time in bottle. 4,000 bottles were produced. Drink 2015-2020.
Recuerdo Aliado Malbec 2011 – 92 Points
The 2011 Recuerdo Aliado is pure Malbec from Los Sauces, Tunuyan, Uco Valley, aged in mostly used French oak. The nose shows great depth and purity, revealing elegant, subtle aromas of raspberries, licorice and violets. The palate shows equally pure and elegant flavors, with very good acidity, persistence and length. The oak is perfectly integrated into the wine. This is ready to enjoy now but should age with grace. A superb Malbec. Drink 2014-2019.
Recuerdo Malbec 2012 – 90 Points
The 2012 Recuerdo Malbec, from young vines in Vista Flores in the Uco Valley, has a complex bouquet of dried flowers, raspberries, blueberries and sweet vanilla. This pure Malbec from stony and sandy soils is aged in mostly third-use oak barrels with some wine kept in vats in order to preserve the fruit and freshness of the wine. The palate is medium-bodied, with great acidity and freshness, pure, focused flavors and great length. Superb for the price. Bravo! Drink 2014-2018.
Recuerdo Torrontés La Rioja 2013 – 89 Points
The 2013 Recuerdo Torrontes is the only wine that has grapes from outside the project. They purchased grapes in La Rioja, searching for citric rather than floral aromas. They harvest and vinify the grapes in three different stages (stainless steel fermented, no malo and no oak) and then they blend them together. Relatively restrained, with aromas of orange peel and tangerine, the palate is fresh, with good acidity and a citric finish that is ideal to go with some empanadas. Enjoy! Drink now.
